Olive Oil 2016

Olive Oil

Hamilton Russell Vineyards Olive Oil is grown in the traditional way without irrigation and at very low yields, both in terms of kilograms per tree and oil yield per kilogram. Extreme care is taken to hand-pick the olives used for our oil at the stage of ripeness which results in a fresh, aromatic, full flavored oil with a peppery finish. A high percentage of sandstone-derived soils emphasize this fresh lifted fruit and cut-grass character while delivering a lighter more elegant palate structure. The percentage of clay grown olives provides additional structure and density to the oil.

Growing Season

The 2016 olive growing season will be remembered for challenging weather conditions. Cooler than normal temperatures were experienced during the flowering and fruit-set periods. The growth period on the other hand experienced one of the warmest average maximum temperatures of the previous 18 seasons. Despite not using irrigation, and with less than average rainfall, we were not exposed to drought conditions during the fruit growth and ripening stages. The warmer conditions allowed for earlier ripening and a smaller crop than the previous season. The resulting fruit was of the very high quality our team strives for.
